Welcome on the website Lapwing tracks! The goal of this website is to provide you with insights into the lives of two charismatic species of our waders, their challenges, and the possibilities for their conservation. This website is being developed as part of a project supported by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic, which focuses on utilizing telemetry data and publicly available data sources to assess habitat quality, existential risks, and effective conservation planning for birds threatened by water loss in the landscape.
One of the key components of the project is telemetry studies on two model bird species – the Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) and the Eurasian Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola). You will be able to follow the journeys of tagged lapwings in the section “Sent by transmitter” where their movements will be displayed in real time. This data will allow us (and you) to track not only their migration to wintering grounds and back but also to uncover many details about the behavior of the monitored individuals and their interactions with the environments they inhabit. The section “Stories revealed by data” will therefore delve deeper into various aspects of lapwing life revealed by the telemetry data in a popular science blog format. In the “Woodcock Trails” section, we will share similar insights gained from tracking the second model species, the Eurasian Woodcock.
